Color and relax… so they say

Hi there, my name is Tabby May and you’ve landed on my website tabbymayart.com. I’ve got no idea why you came here, but it might have something to do with coloring.

Since December 2015 I’ve started coloring. I didn’t do it on purpose, it’s my daughter’s fault ;). She’d been telling me for months that coloring for adults was a huge hit worldwide. I had heard her, but never felt the need to act on it. Why on earth would I want to start coloring? I couldn’t think of one good reason, so I didn’t do anything. Besides, I only had some very (VERY!) cheap pencils of absolutely zero quality. So there you go, one reason to actually not start coloring!

But before I move on, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a woman, way into my forties, I’m a mother of two adult children, a daughter and a son, I’m a wife (married to my first love in my second marriage… but that’s a whole other story!), I’m a cat, dog and bunny mommy (living with me is like living in the Zoo), I’m usually in Spain but every now and then I like to fly back to my country of origin which is the Netherlands, and I’m artistic in several ways. I like to write and I’m working on my first book, I’m a singer, guitarist and songwriter (look me up in Spotify and iTunes!), and I also play some other instruments like electric organ, keyboard, piano and accordion. And, as mentioned above, I color.

Let me tell you how that happened.

Last December I went to see my family in Holland. My daughter had bought me a present: a coloring book! Thanks very much, so now I had to buy something to color with. Visiting my sister we went to some shops, including a couple of book stores. And there they had a couple of very easy coloring books. Oh, what the heck, let’s buy those too! So I did. In another store my sister showed me they had very cheap gel pens, different colors and different types, like metallic, glitter and neon. I bought my sister some and well, while I already gained two or three coloring books in just a few days, I bought some myself as well.

At my sister’s house it started… we took the gel pens and our books (she had bought one also) and we took off coloring. And I liked it… (Actually, I have been coloring nearly all my life, but always with children in children’s coloring books).

Long story short, my daughter added me to a Facebook coloring-for-adults group, I connected with lots of coloring fans, started buying anything and everything I could lay my hands on and now I’m coloring nearly every day as if my life depends on it!

And it’s true, it does help to relax, empty my head and just focus on bringing drawings to life with bright colors.

Before you ask why I’ve started this website, I’ll tell you. First of all I’d like to show my coloring work to the world, but secondly I’ve noticed that starting with coloring raises a lot of questions. What kind of material do I have to buy? What kind of pencils are on the market, and what do they cost and how is the quality compared to the price? And what books should I get, what kind of books are there? And about techniques… there’s an avalanche of Youtube videos with all kinds of tutorials, but where do you begin when you’re just starting with coloring? All these questions came to MY mind, so I can imagine that lots of people have the same or similar questions. And this blog will help you by answering them one by one and getting familiar with material, books, techniques and most of all: share the fun of coloring!

So, how ‘bout you? Are you already coloring? I forgot to tell, but I’m also a very curious person J! So leave your comment below and tell me what your favorite coloring books are, your favorite materials etc. Looking forward to hearing from you!

  1. My sister-in-law started us off and now there are several in the family who are coloring more or less consistently. My preferred medium is glitter gel pens but I also use colored pencils, crayons, brush tip pens, and ultra fine point markers. I have many coloring books. I recently finished the Angie Grace book Breathe and purchased another of hers. My last purchases were Debbie Macomber’s Come Home to Color and Aunty Acid’s Kiss My Sass. I have a Harry Potter and a Doctor Who coloring book as well as Mary Englebreit’s Color Me and Mary Winters-Meyer’s Dragons, Knots, Bots and More. I also have been enjoying Jenean Morrison’s 2016 calendar coloring book – pictures for every single day which can also be used to journal if desired. As you can see, I’m all over the place with themes in my coloring. I like variety. Sometimes I feel like tackling a complicated piece and other times, I want something simple. Coloring supplies are not cheap since the ink runs out in pens all too soon. Pencils last longest. I also love my blending pencil. Crayola makes erasable coloring pencils if one is interested in that.

    • Thanks so much for your comment, Sandie! (Sorry for the late response… been too busy). Like you I like variety and have lots of different coloring books (which I will post on the website soon). My favorite colored pencils are the Faber Castell Polychromos and the Prismacolor Premier Soft Core pencils.

  2. Love your colouring- and your website is AWESOME! Enjoyed reading your blogs. Is it okay if I put a link to this website in a Facebook adult colouring page I belong to please? I think they will really enjoy it.

    • Hi Sonia, thanks for the compliment. It’s still a bit of a work in progress, lots of things I want to change/fix on my website… but sure you can put a link to it on Facebook. I’d be flattered 🙂 A new review is coming up later today, and more is underway. Thanks for your response xx
